NG44 Hub has launched Jirigi, an open online course that teaches African farmers and traders the basics of food safety and safe farming. It is the hub's first public learning product.
Four modules, no jargon
Jirigi covers four topics that come up again and again in day-to-day farming and trading. The first two deal with aflatoxin in grains and with safe pesticide use. The others cover combined fish and vegetable farming and the clean handling of fresh produce such as tomatoes and leafy greens.
Each module is short on purpose. It explains the problem and why it matters, then shows what to do about it. Flashcards help learners review, and a quiz at the end of each module confirms that the lesson has landed.
Built for the field
Jirigi is written for field workers, extension officers, farmers, cooperative members and market handlers. It runs in a phone browser and needs no signal once it has loaded. Progress is saved on the learner's own device.
What the name means
A jirigi is the kind of container people already trust to carry something valuable safely from one place to another. The course aims to do the same job with knowledge.
Update, September 2026: 318 learners have registered for Jirigi, and more than half complete the course within two weeks of starting.
