NG44 Hub has launched AflaLearn, a free and self-paced online course on aflatoxin. The course explains a hidden threat to health and income in plain language and focuses on the prevention methods that actually work.
A poison you cannot see
Aflatoxin is produced by moulds that grow on maize and groundnut in warm, damp conditions. Contaminated grain can look and smell completely normal. Over time, exposure damages the liver and is linked to stunted growth in children.
It is also an economic problem. Buyers increasingly test for aflatoxin before they pay, and grain above the legal limit is rejected or sold at a heavy discount.
What learners will find
AflaLearn walks through what aflatoxin is and why it matters before moving to practical prevention from harvest to storage. It closes with an overview of regional research and prevention efforts such as FS4Africa.
The course is free and works on any phone or computer. Learner progress is stored on the learner's own device.
Part of a wider programme
AflaLearn joins Jirigi in the hub's Open Food Safety Courses programme, which aims to put practical food safety knowledge in the hands of the people who grow and trade Africa's food.
Update, September 2026: 51 learners have registered for AflaLearn since launch.
